How to Choose the Right Box Strength for Shipping in India

Box strength is measured by two parameters in India: Bursting Factor (BF) and Edge Crush Test (ECT). Understanding these helps you avoid under-packaging (product damage) and over-packaging (cost waste).

Bursting Factor (BF)

Measures puncture resistance. Standard 3-ply boxes come in 12-16 BF. Heavy-duty 5-ply starts at 18 BF.

Edge Crush Test (ECT)

Measures stacking strength. For palletized loads, always specify ECT along with BF.

General Guidelines for Pune Businesses

  • E-commerce orders (up to 3 kg): 3-ply, 12-14 BF
  • Industrial goods (3-15 kg): 3-ply or 5-ply, 14-18 BF
  • Heavy machinery parts (15-50 kg): 5-ply or 7-ply, 18-22 BF
  • Export via ocean: Wooden crates or seaworthy packaging
