Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) packaging is a class of packaging material that emits corrosion-inhibiting molecules into the enclosed space around metal components. These molecules form a molecular layer on metal surfaces that prevents the electrochemical reaction responsible for rust and corrosion. Unlike oil or grease coating, VCI protection is invisible, does not require cleaning before use, and leaves no residue on the component.
VCI packaging is the standard corrosion protection solution for metal component export, long-term storage, and domestic transit through humid conditions. Upackarts supplies VCI bags, VCI paper, and VCI film for manufacturers and exporters of ferrous and non-ferrous metal components in Pune's MIDC belt.
VCI bags are the most common format — the component is placed inside the bag, the bag is sealed, and the VCI atmosphere develops inside. VCI bags are used for individual components, sub-assemblies, bearings, fasteners, and spare parts. VCI paper is used to wrap large components that do not fit into bags, or as an interleaving material between components stacked in wooden crates. VCI film is used as a pallet cover or as a wrap for very large components or complete machinery.
VCI packaging protects ferrous metals (steel, cast iron), non-ferrous metals (aluminium, copper, brass, bronze), and bimetallic assemblies. The protection duration is 12-24 months when the packaging seal is maintained.
Auto-component manufacturers in Chakan and Bhosari MIDC exporting machined parts and sub-assemblies to overseas OEM customers use VCI bags as standard protection. Bearing manufacturers and distributors use VCI paper for long-term warehouse storage. Machine tool exporters use VCI film to wrap complete machines before wooden crate packing.
VCI protection lasts 12-24 months under normal storage conditions when the packaging seal is maintained. If the bag or wrap is opened and resealed, the effective protection period is reduced. For very long-term storage (above 24 months), desiccant packets added inside the VCI packaging extend the protection life.
No. VCI protection is a molecular-level process — the inhibitor molecules adsorb on the metal surface and can be removed by simply removing the packaging and exposing the component to fresh air. No cleaning, degreasing, or surface treatment is required before use.
For most auto-component export applications, VCI packaging provides equivalent or better corrosion protection compared to oil or grease coating, without the cleaning step required at the destination. Many OEM buyers prefer VCI-protected components specifically because they arrive clean and ready to install without degreasing.
